CHAPTER 21

Tryn sat opposite Jarrod and Syon. The cell was stifling; the air reeked. They’d passed a long row of cells just like this, full of men, women and children and none too clean. Mostly the place smelled like fear. She knew she did. Here in the light of day, behind lock and key, she was more frightened than in the midst of battle. She didn’t like the turn of events and Jarrod’s (and Syon’s) complacency wasn’t making her any more comfortable. How had they all ended up like this?

Her conversation with Jarrod via Quillian was stilted. She’d been at a loss for words, and so had he. Quill’s translations weren’t helping. Her Were-fey was tired. He wanted to sleep. Couldn’t they just speak for themselves? No? Then perhaps they should sleep as well.

Jarrod suggested they act as strangers, just in case. It was hard for her to do, but seemingly not for him. Jarrod hadn’t so much as looked her in the eye and he was only an arm’s length away.

Quill thought this was a good thing. Spies, he said. They watch.

I thought we were the spies…

Flies buzzed around her head and she shooed them away. No one spoke. The day got hotter. Shadows from the high barred window slashed down the wall, across Jarrod’s face and onto the floor. They lengthened as the day wore on and even after sunset they didn’t fully disappear. There must be a streetlamp outside, Tryn thought. In the stillness of the night she heard crickets and the distant drone of voices—the guards playing with dice? A child cried. Troops drilled on the parade ground. A mule brayed.

She closed her eyes. Water. There had been none since afternoon.

When she opened her eyes, there was still no water. Jarrod and Syon argued in hushed tones until their whispers turned to spits and hisses. She’d never seen Jarrod display anger. It shocked her the way he’d entrained to Syon—matched his aggressive stance. They had different views on what to do next. With a thousand armed warriors on the other side of the prison door, she thought it didn’t matter what plan they came up with. How would they all escape? Even if Quill slipped them away, every road in and out of Orn was patrolled. The rest was wide-open plains. All the dark nooks and crannies of the forests were far to the north. We’re the centre of the bull’s-eye, again.

They might hide in the city, but for how long? Could Quill slip them all to safe ground? He’d never tried such a thing and had to rest even after slipping one. Quill? She was thirsty, hungry and in desperate need of sleep. Her eyes felt dry until they filled with hot tears.

Both men looked at her and she blinked back the emotion.

She crossed her arms. ‘What?’

‘You shouldn’t be here,’ Jarrod said.

‘But you two should?’ Tryn stared at them both.

Syon shrugged and Jarrod turned on him.
